No LA Greens Meeting in June - Hike Instead 6/20

"Journey to the Center of L.A."

In lieu of a June business meeting and to decompress after the Election and all our hard work Against Prop 14, For Prop 15, and in celebration of candidates from
our local, Lisa Green and Linda Piera-Avila, running for State Assembly:

Celebrate the Summer Solstice and Father's Day with the L.A. Greens on Sunday, June 20 as we go on an outing to Franklin Canyon, which contains the geographic center of Los Angeles! Guide Linda Piera-Avila will lead us to the spot along a trail, under an oak tree, which marks the center of L.A.! Yes, you read that right! Then, we will take a leisurely 1 mile easy walk around Franklin Canyon Lake, stopping to admire the flora and fauna along the way. Franklin Canyon has also been the location for filming of such classics as "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Star Trek," among others.

We will meet in the parking lot below the nature center.
Bring sturdy shoes, a hat, water, sunscreen and a sack lunch for a picnic afterward. Camera and binoculars, too, if you have them.

Optional special opportunity for early birds! Arrive an hour before the walk begins to join Qi Gong instructor and L.A. Green Jack Neff for a sample class. You won't want to miss this treat!

For those who want to stay after our walk and picnic, there is the Sooky Goldman Nature Center on premises.

Free parking. (But be sure to make complete stops at the stop signs or risk getting your photo taken and a big ticket!)

Directions (note: if you think you are lost as you are driving in, you are probably going the right way! Follow the signs posted, too!):

From L. A. and the Westside:
From Sunset Blvd., turn north on Beverly Dr. Continue on Beverly Dr. by veering left at "to Coldwater Cyn. Dr." sign and left at intersection with Coldwater Cyn. Dr. (look for Beverly Hills Fire Station #2 on the right at this juncture). Go about a mile and then turn right on Franklin Cyn. Dr. Continue north on Franklin Cyn. Dr. past Lake Dr. Drive around the lake (one way road - watch for hikers at this point). Turn right at sign for William O. Douglas Outdoor Classroom and continue a short distance to large dirt parking lot where we will meet.

From the San Fernando Valley:
From the Ventura Fwy (101), go 2.5 miles south on Coldwater Cyn. Ave. At intersection with Mulholland Dr. and Franklin Cyn. Dr. (directly across from Coldwater Canyon Park and Tree People), turn right on Franklin Cyn. ( This is an odd intersection - make sure you turn on to Franklin and not Mulholland!) Dr. Go 0.5 mile and turn left at sign for William O. Douglas Outdoor Classroom and continue a short distance to large dirt parking lot where we will meet.
